How to Do Competitor Analysis: A Complete Guide for 2026

A step-by-step guide to competitor analysis — how to identify competitors, analyse their traffic, content, and keywords, and use that intelligence to grow.

What Is Competitor Analysis in SEO?

Competitor analysis in SEO is the process of systematically studying the sites that rank alongside or above you in search results — examining their traffic, content, keywords, backlinks, and positioning — to identify opportunities and inform your own strategy. Done well, it answers the most important strategic questions: what are they ranking for that you aren't? What content is driving their growth? Where are the gaps you can exploit?

There are two types of competitors worth analysing: business competitors (companies selling the same product or service) and SEO competitors (any site ranking for your target keywords, even if they aren't a direct business rival). A Wikipedia article, a comparison site, or an industry blog can be an SEO competitor without selling anything. Both matter, because both take up ranking positions you want to occupy.

Step 1: Identify Your Real Competitors

Start with a Google search for your five most important target keywords. The pages consistently appearing in the top five results are your primary SEO competitors, regardless of whether they're business competitors. Make a list of the five to ten domains appearing most frequently. These are the sites you should be studying most closely — they've figured out something about ranking in your niche that you haven't yet.

Also look at your business competitors directly. Search their domain in a traffic intelligence tool like Traffic Finder to see their estimated monthly visits, traffic source split, and top organic keywords. This tells you whether they're growing organically, whether they rely heavily on paid traffic, and which of their content pieces are generating the most search traffic — all of which informs where to compete and where to find gaps.

Step 2: Analyse Their Traffic and Content

For each competitor, run a domain traffic lookup to understand their traffic volume, channel mix, and geographic focus. Pay particular attention to their organic traffic share and trend — a competitor with consistently growing organic traffic is executing an SEO strategy worth studying. Then look at their top pages: these are the content pieces driving the most organic visits. If a competitor's 'best website traffic tools' comparison article is generating significant traffic, that's a proven topic with demonstrated demand in your niche.

Read their best-performing content critically. How long is it? How is it structured? Does it cover the topic more thoroughly than anything you have? What's missing — what does it fail to address that a more comprehensive piece could cover? The goal isn't to copy, but to identify the content standard you need to meet or exceed in order to rank alongside or above it. Google's ranking algorithm is essentially asking: 'which page best answers this query?' Your job is to make a more convincing case than the current top-ranking pages.

Step 3: Find Keyword Gaps and Opportunities

A keyword gap is a term your competitor ranks for that you don't. These are often the fastest opportunities because demand is proven (someone is already ranking for it) and you know the content type that works (you've seen the competitor's page). Use a keyword research tool to look up the keyword, check its volume and difficulty, then produce a more complete, better-structured version of the content that's already ranking.

Also look for topic gaps — entire subject areas your competitors cover that you haven't addressed yet. If three of your top five competitors have a dedicated blog section and you don't, that's a structural gap. If they all have comparison pages against major tools and you don't, that's a gap. Systematic competitor analysis turns a vague sense that you need more content into a concrete, prioritised content calendar based on what's already proven to drive traffic in your market.
